About the Community
The village of Wakefield is rich in history. It was first settled in the 18th century as part of the town
named South Kingston. Thousands of tourists visit each summer, with Wakefield centrally located
to all of Rhode Island's beaches, ranging from Westerlys Misquamicut Beach on the West to
Newports Second Beach to the East. South Kingstown is home to three of the most beautiful
beaches in the state, East Matunuck, South Kingstown Town Beach, and Moonstone Beach National
Wildlife Refuge, the longest stretch of undeveloped beach in the state. There are numerous
destinations within a short drive, including the mansions of Newport, the culinary delights of
Providence, and the ferry connecting to beautiful Block Island. The beaches of Narragansett are a
10 minute drive, as is the University of Rhode Island. Fine seafood dining and nightlife abound.
