About Clinch Valley Health

Nestled in the Appalachian Mountains of southwest Virginia, the town of Richlands in Tazewell County is a family-friendly community, rich in cultural resources and surrounded by natural beauty.

The Hospital

Clinch Valley Health has served southwest Virginia since 1938. The hospital provides a wide range of inpatient and outpatient services at its 200-bed acute care facility the largest in far southwest Virginia and at its physician practices. Known as a leader in offering the latest medical technology, Clinch Valley Health was among the first healthcare facilities in the world to offer image-guided radiation therapy (IG-IMRT) as part of its Cancer Treatment Center, and was the first in its region to use bar-code technology to enhance patient safety. It has been repeatedly ranked as one of the nation's top hospitals for treatment of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

The Community

Richlands is found in an area of beautiful rolling hills, clear rivers, lush pastures and scenic mountains and is part of the Clinch River Basin, named by The Nature Conservancy as one of the 20 Last Great Places in the world. It is home to Southwest Virginia Community College, which offers more than 80 programs of study and a full calendar of cultural events; the Historic Crab Orchard Museum, a reconstructed pioneer settlement featuring a number of living history events; and Burke's Garden, a 20,000-acre mountaintop bowl known as "God's Thumbprint."

The surrounding area offers a treasure trove of opportunities for golfers, hunters, hikers, mountain bikers and other outdoor enthusiasts. World-class whitewater rafting can be found on the worlds second-oldest river, the New River. Skiers can take to the slopes at nearby Winterplace Resort. And fishing fans can cast their lures in numerous native trout streams, quiet lakes or local rivers. The nearby Jefferson National Forest features more than 400 miles of maintained trails, including 60 miles of the Appalachian Trail. Tazewell County is also home to six of the eight designated points for the Mountain Heritage Loop, part of the Virginia Birding and Wildlife Trail.
