In the rural community of Libby, the Center for Asbestos Related Disease (CARD) has emerged as a national center of excellence in addressing health care and research associated with Libby Amphibole (LA) asbestos.  CARD is a non-profit clinic created in response to the nation's first Public Emergency ever declared by the EPA.  

Clinical care of patients with environmental exposure to LA allows a depth of understanding of asbestos disease, over the course of individual progression and across generations.  This unique perspective translates into informed research opportunities, increasing the chance of developing meaningful therapeutic intervention.  To facilitate research CARD maintains key relationships with research affiliates including Mount Sinai School of Medicine, Idaho State University and many others.  Projects have included reserach on biomarkers, childhood exposures, radiographic disease progression, mechanisms of disease and psychosocial responses.

 In addition to advancing the science of ARD through academic research relationships, providers maintain a part-time clinical schedule managing advacned asbestos disease as well as supporting a national asbestos health screening program two medical providers and a team of twentystaff members provide holistic patient care, including conunseling service, respiratory therapy case management, community outreach and education.  

CARD is an outpaitent clinic, open to patients Monday through Thursday, with no call requirements, serving an expanding patient population of 4,500.  Our location on the beautiful Kootenai River, amongst mountainous wilderness, makes this opportunity a surprising combination of academic stimulation, rewarding patient care and persnal quality of life for those who enjoy outdoor recreation opportunities.
