Allergist/Immunologist

UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh

Job Description

UPMC Childrens Hospital of Pittsburgh'sDivision of Allergy and Immunologyoffers a two to three year ACGME accredited training program. The program currently allows for two fellows per year: one from pediatrics and the other with a background in internal medicine. The main goal of the program is to provide a broad training experience that prepares physicians to enter academics as either clinician/educators or researchers. The program is based at the only pediatric hospital in the region, and consequently trainees are exposed to a wide range of both allergic and immunologic disease states in children. The adult experience is obtained at the University Hospital which also provides a wide variety of clinical cases in adult patients. One of the strengths of the program is a broad clinical experience in pediatric and adult clinical care, inpatient and outpatient cases, and both allergic and immunologic disease states. The University of Pittsburgh is a consistent leader in NIH funding, and fellows gain valuable research experience under the direction of internationally recognized mentors and a myriad of outstanding opportunities. The research program is able to position fellows to embark upon careers in academic medicine. Fellows learn from division faculty members who offer world-leading expertise in genetics, epidemiology, cellular and molecular biology, and clinical trials relating to allergic diseases and asthma. During the first year of training, fellows are able to work with a mentorship committee to explore research interests and identify potential research mentors. Researchoversight committee meetings are held quarterly during the second year of fellowship, and the majority of this year is devoted to research. Fellows are expected to present research findings at a national meeting, with the goal of preparing a manuscript for publication in a peer-reviewed journal by the completion of the training period. Fellows are strongly encouraged to pursue a third year of training, which is dedicated to research, and this year is used to prepare for transitioning to a faculty position.
