By recognizing that each facility has its own unique culture and way of thinking about mental health problems and resident quality of life, we pride ourselves on our ability to provide individualized services to each facility as opposed to trying to impose a one-size-fits-all model. One facility may be skewed towards a population with young chronically mentally ill residents, where another may be overwhelmed with residents with dementia-related aggression and agitation. Each will have markedly different needs and priorities that will guide how we partner with them to help their residents. Several key themes serve as the foundation for MedOptions clinical model, each of which complements the other.

The first is the true multidisciplinary nature of the organization. It is our strongly held belief that in a field as clinically challenging as long-term care behavioral health, it takes a team of psychiatrists, psychologists, advanced practice nurses, physician assistants and social workers to deliver optimal care. Unlike other long-term care providers, we do not view one discipline as the prescriber, and another discipline as the therapist. Instead, we integrate disciplines in a collaborative manner that enables care to be delivered smartly rather than by rote.

This leads to the second theme: our clinical philosophy is to manage symptoms and behavioral problems. We recognize that when dealing with the complexities of dementia, medical co-morbidities, chronic psychiatric illnesses and mood disorders, our goals are to reduce the frequency and severity of symptoms and behavioral problems, enabling residents to stay in their facility and avoiding costly and often ineffective hospitalizations. Our clinical model reflects the best of both worlds: practicing evidence-based medicine while also tailoring our recommendations to the individual needs and cultures of our facilities. While we cant single-handedly reform the long-term care industry, we can do our best to empower facility staff by improving their knowledge and problem-solving skills.

The third theme that defines MedOptions is innovation. We work in a rapidly evolving health care world. The complexion of the typical nursing or assisted living facility resident is changing, requiring new effective intervention programs. We are introducing three such programs: Rapid Response Hospital Diversion Program, Neuro-Cognitive Rehabilitation, and the Clinical Pathways Program. Our hospital diversion program allows MedOptions to rapidly diagnose and treat behavior problems in the facility often preventing unnecessary ER evaluations and hospital treatment. Our neuro-cognitive rehabilitation program supports skilled rehabilitation therapies and produces better health outcomes. Our pathways program helps facilities succeed with the management of residents with challenging behavior problems.

Finally, MedOptions is an organization that places a high priority on relationships. Just as with individual residents and family members, relationships with facilities take time and effort to develop: within a facility, we build them with the administrator, director of nursing, director of social services, the staff nurse, and many others. We realize that we are not present in the facilities as often as the staff is, and that staff needs to be listened to and have their experiences validated to foster improvements in residents symptoms and behaviors.
